SOL’s DRIVE for THE GATHERING PLACE

bra drive for the gathering place large SOL’s DRIVE for THE GATHERING PLACE

For the month of October SOL will be collecting new and gently-worn bras to donate to The Gathering Place.  When you bring your gently worn bras to SOL, treat yourself to a bra fitting and make a difference for yourself AND someone else.

Since 2005 SOL has distributed more than 3500 bras to the women of The Gathering Place, Denver’s only daytime drop-in center for women and children who are experiencing homelessness or poverty.   But SOL owners Cindy Johnson and Jeanie Peterson along with SOL lingerie’s staff do more than just donate the bras. They go once each month to do the same private fittings they do for their Cherry Creek North customers, demonstrating a gentle touch and taking one more burden from the women The Gathering Place serves.  If none of the donated items fits a woman, SOL orders a brand new bra from a manufacturer free of charge.

Cherry Creek Mall Adds 5 Elite stores

A French boutique, fashionista favorite, self-serve yogurt shop, Sports Authority’s first venture into high-end performance wear, and the shopping center’s first nail salon are expanding Cherry Creek Mall’s selection of stores.

BCBGMAXAZRIA, which has already opened, carries women’s ready-to-wear lines by founding designer Max Azria. Shoppers can choose from evening dresses, swimwear, footwear, handbags and watches, among other items. The store’s name comes from the French phrase “bon chic, bon genre,” which reportedly is Parisian slang for “good style, good attitude.”

Cherry on Top, a self-serve yogurt store, recently opened on the lower level. Posh Nails, the mall’s first nail salon, has opened on the upper level next to Macy’s.

Façonnable, a boutique featuring French Riviera-inspired fashions for men and women and S.A. Elite are both scheduled to open this summer. The Cherry Creek location of S.A. Elite, which Sports Authority designed to meet the needs of elite sports enthusiasts, is the first one to be launched.

The Denver Business Journal reports that the Cherry Creek Mall is the exclusive location for each of the five new stores. They join the mall’s other 37 stores, each of which is exclusive to the Denver area.

The Art of Shaving

Before it became an art, there was a history to shaving that would take us back into the Stone Age.

Early man had discovered several ways to remove hairs from his face, but most widely known is that he simply plucked them out using two seashells as tweezers. In fact, tweezers have taken their place in history as the most popular grooming tool ever invented. Used by both “civilized” and uncivilized men to painfully remove body and facial hair. More recently shaving had become one of those glorious male traditions, to be passed down from father to son. But somewhere along the line, shaving became just another mindless morning exercise in Stone Age dignity. But things have changed.

Tucked away on the second level of the Cherry Creek Mall is the “The Art of Shaving”. Developed in 1995, it’s a classic tale of boy meets girl, and both quickly step to the forefront of what would become a revolution in Men’s Grooming. You can read their story here.

Located in the Cherry Creek Mall, at 3000 East First Ave. in Denver, “The Art of Shaving” combines traditional barber services with 21st century aromatherapy solutions and skin treatments. The shops themselves represent as the classic barber-shop, but with service and products that bring together the luxury and care a man used to expect from his favorite barber.  Expertly trained technicians use quality botanical ingredients and pure essential oils to raise shaving to an art, once again.

Now the line between looking your very best, and insufferable vanity is of course razor-thin.  And so, if during their famous Royal Shave, or as the scented lotions are gently massaged into your temples, you start feeling a little too precious,  just think of seashells, and maybe ask for another beer.

Pets Are People Too

It’s Holiday Season.

Somehow, you wind up in the pet store. The kids are with you.

Little Bobby wants that puppy for Christmas, and you really want him to have it. But you know he’s not old enough to give the animal the care it would need, and you wouldn’t have the time. We have a problem.
So ask yourself this: Would you adopt a child on impulse?  Well, certainly not.
More likely you’d go home and discuss the matter with the rest of your family, first. You’d look at your lifestyle, your finances, your living arrangements, and other family commitments, then make a decision.

It’s important to consider these same issues when adopting a pet.

Too many of us act impulsively when it comes to adding a pet to the family, forgetting, perhaps even momentarily, that that adorable puppy or that lovable kitten will need house training, grooming, veterinary care, food and water each and every day, and lots of attention.
Your attention.

Now don’t misunderstand. Pets are good for people. Studies have shown that pets can help lower blood pressure and diminish depression, and oh the companionship. But if you adopt a pet you aren’t prepared to care for, or one that doesn’t suit your lifestyle, you may end up with more stress than you bargained for, and your pet becomes just another animal facing adoption. Or worse.
Animal shelters across the country are full of these stories and their unhappy endings.

So here are 6 things you should consider, and consider carefully, before bringing in a new pet:

  • Financial commitment
  • Time commitment
  • The family’s health
  • Where you live
  • Ages of children
  • Local pet laws

Choosing your new pet wisely is an important first step in making it a part of your family.
And having Little Bobby join in the discussions will surely do no harm.

Holiday Shopping Wisecracks

Times are tight, the holidays are coming, and you’re tired of the budget. Boo hoo.
Seems you haven’t quite figured out that the best money-saving strategies are, more often than not, the simplest ones.
If you don’t need it, don’t buy it. Sage advice in these uncertain times.

Here are some more DO’s and Don’ts on Budget Basics:

  • DO recognize your bad spending habits. Your neighbors are never as impressed as they appear to be.
  • DON’T kid yourself. If you don’t have the money for a purchase when you hand over your credit card, chances are good you won’t have it when the bill arrives.
  • DO yourself a favor. Set goals for major purchases, and look for ways to reduce unnecessary spending while setting priorities.
  • DON’T blame anyone but yourself for financial chaos. Those designer shoes didn’t follow you out of the store on their own.

Budgeting and saving is hard work, and don’t let anyone tell you it isn’t, but with a little self-determination (no, make that a lot of self-determination) and planning,  you’ll sail through, especially when times are tight.

Linens 'n Things Folds

Linens ‘n Things

, another corporate victim of a widespread credit crunch, will begin liquidating its remaining stores as early as this week after the bankrupt home goods retailer failed to find a buyer that will operate the company as a going concern.

The retailer, which initially struggled amid a housing slowdown and a decline in consumer discretionary spending, was finally taken down by a credit crisis that prevented possible buyers from getting the credit to fund a purchase.

As of December 31

, 2007 the company was one of the largest purchasers of home furnishings in the United States, employed some 17,500 people and had a vendor base of about 1,000 suppliers, according to court documents.

At that time, the company was operating 589 stores in 47 states and seven Canadian provinces. But the sharp decline in the housing market and a slump in consumer discretionary spending undermined the company’s ability to pay its suppliers.

The national home store retailer Linen-N-Things has announced on its website that their doors will close, with a 30% off-everything-must-go parting gift to shoppers.  There are ten locations here in Colorado.

Shopping Pink

Only a few hours left in October, but you still have time  to  “shop pink” , knowing that the proceeds will help benefit breast cancer awareness and research.

Locally-based contemporary fine jeweler John Atencio has styled his most recent work in pink a stunning Inspiration Pendant, and 25 percent of the sale of each piece will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink Program. The Passionately Pink Program is an awareness and fund-raising campaign where registrants choose to wear pink and make donations to the Komen Foundation.

The Inspiration pendant is designed by and is exclusive to John Atencio. The sterling silver pendant has the authentic JA stamp and includes a pink cord. Available for $100 – that translates to $25 for the fight against breast cancer. Well worth it.
