Cherry Creek North named recipient of 2011 Downtown Merit Award
International Downtown Association recognizes “The New North” streetscape project

DENVER – During its most recent annual conference in Charlotte, the International Downtown Association recognized the Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District (BID) with a 2011 Downtown Merit Award for its recently completed $18.5M streetscape project, “The New North”.

The self-funded project was among 11 qualified entries in the category of Public Space. This category recognizes capital improvements that enhanced the urban design, physical function, or economic vitality of downtown and the community. “The New North” project was completed on time and under budget in 2011.

“The recently completed renovations have been warmly received by merchants, property owners and shoppers alike, and we are excited to receive a national honor like this from our peers that recognizes the great end results so many people worked so hard for,” said CCNBID President and CEO Julie Bender.

The BID commemorated the successful completion of the project on June 25, 2011, with a free grand opening celebration on the renovated Fillmore Plaza that more than 6,000 people attended. “The New North” project includes new landscaping to beautify the area and conserve water, new lighting for safety and energy conservation, better identity and wayfinding signage, 20 new Art and Garden spaces and upgraded infrastructure. It is the first major renovation to the area since 1989. The design and construction costs are paid for by the BID. No City funds were used for the project.

“The Cherry Creek North BID’s project received the IDA Merit Award for delivering excellence in downtown management”, said David Downey, IDA President and CEO. “Each year the IDA Awards Jury recognizes organizations that utilize best practices in our industry. “The New North” is a shining example of excellent downtown management that delivers real results.”

About the CCNBID: The Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District (BID) was established in 1989 as the first business improvement district in Colorado. The District provides essential services that support property owners, merchants, and other users of the District that would otherwise not be available. The BID is governed by a board of directors that is appointed by the Mayor of Denver, approved by the Denver City Council, and serve at the pleasure of the Mayor and Council. Property taxes from the District property owners are the primary source of financial support. Based upon annual revenues, the Cherry Creek North BID is the second largest in Colorado.

About the IDA: The Washington, D.C. based International Downtown Association (IDA) is a champion for vital and livable urban centers and strives to inform, influence and inspire downtown leaders and advocates. With 550 members and thousands of friends, IDA is a guiding force in creating healthy and dynamic centers that anchor the well-being of towns, cities and regions.

Preloaded Cards Available for Use with New Cherry Creek Meters

photo meters denver Preloaded Cards Available for Use with New Cherry Creek MetersJust in time for the holiday season, the Denver Public Works is offering ParkSmart Denver cards to those who plan to use the parking meters found in downtown Denver and in Cherry Creek.

Recently, the city completely replaced the parking kiosks in Cherry Creek and in the downtown area with SmartMeters. Not only are these new meters more eco-friendly because they run on solar power, but they also accept credit cards and feature a digital display that shows how much time is left on the meter. Where law enforcement is concerned, the meters are also convenient because the flash different colors when the time has expired.

Although the installation of the new meters cost Cherry Creek $380,000, business owners and residents feel the change was worthwhile. In fact, over the past several years, there have been numerous complaints about the parking kiosks, which many found to be complicated to use. According to many business owners, the kiosks resulted in a drop in business as consumers tried to avoid Cherry Creek so they wouldn’t have to deal with the inconvenience of using the kiosks. Similarly, many residents reported that their friends had stopped visiting them out of fear of getting an expensive parking ticket.

“They were terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible,” said David Ellis, who is the owner of David Ellis Jewelers on 3rd Avenue, in a Denver Daily News article. “They just didn’t work, they were no good, people couldn’t find them, people didn’t know how to use them, they had to have an education. When people are shopping retail electively, they want an education. Cherry Creek’s finally getting meters and not baloney kiosks that were just ridiculous.”

While the new meters still accept quarters, which is another change from the kiosks that had been installed in 2004-2005, those who want to pre-pay for their parking time can easily do so with the new preloaded cards. The plastic cards, which are the same size as a credit card, can be preloaded in $5, $15, $25, $50 and $100 increments. No extra fees or charges are assessed when using the cards, which can be purchased at the Wellington Webb building, King Soopers, Downtown Denver Partnership, Wastewater Management Division building and both Tattered Cover bookstores in Denver.

“We believe the SmartMeters will make Cherry Creek North a better and more convenient destination for shopping,” said Julie Bender, who is the president and chief executive of the Cherry Creek North BID¸ after the kiosks had been replaced.

The preloaded cards can be used in any of the 4,200 Smart Meters that have been installed in downtown Denver and Cherry Creek.

Cherry Creek Sees Improvements in Time for the Holiday Season

While visiting Cherry Creek North for your holiday shopping, you might be surprised by some of the improvements that have been taking place within the popular shopping district. In fact, the shopping district has just finished going through the first major improvements it has seen in the last 20 years.

Largely driven by feedback from customers, smart meters have now been placed at the parking kiosks throughout Cherry Creek North. Energy-efficient lighting has also been put into place along the streets, better signs have been installed, new store directories have been put in place at every intersection and new plants have been placed along the walkway.

“The new lighting is going to make it a much better nighttime environment within the district, the new landscaping will be beautiful to look at,” said Jule Bender, who is the president of the Business District.

In all, the project cost about $18.5 million, with the more than 300 businesses within the district picking up the cost.

Cherry Creek Shopping Center has also been transformed for the holiday season. This year’s theme of Ice Palace has already been launched and Santa has already paid the shopping center a visit. In addition to the holiday décor being designed to look as if it was carved from ice, this year’s exhibit also features some highlights from the upcoming “Chronicles of Narnia” movie.

SOL’s DRIVE for THE GATHERING PLACE

bra drive for the gathering place large SOL’s DRIVE for THE GATHERING PLACE

For the month of October SOL will be collecting new and gently-worn bras to donate to The Gathering Place.  When you bring your gently worn bras to SOL, treat yourself to a bra fitting and make a difference for yourself AND someone else.

Since 2005 SOL has distributed more than 3500 bras to the women of The Gathering Place, Denver’s only daytime drop-in center for women and children who are experiencing homelessness or poverty.   But SOL owners Cindy Johnson and Jeanie Peterson along with SOL lingerie’s staff do more than just donate the bras. They go once each month to do the same private fittings they do for their Cherry Creek North customers, demonstrating a gentle touch and taking one more burden from the women The Gathering Place serves.  If none of the donated items fits a woman, SOL orders a brand new bra from a manufacturer free of charge.

As One Restaurant Closes, Another Opens in Cherry Creek

Yesterday, the Mexican cantina known as Tambien closed its door in Cherry Creek. Although the restaurant plans to reopen later in an undetermined location, the owners of the restaurant feel Cherry Creek simply isn’t a good fit for the restaurant.

“We want to protect and maintain the brand, but this is a young, hip, loud restaurant that will do well in a young, hip neighborhood, so we’re looking around to find a space that’s more appropriate for that kind of vibe,” said Jesse Morreale, who is one of the owners of the restaurant.

With the Cherry Creek lease expiring, Morreale and co-owner Sean Yontz decided to close the restaurant’s doors rather than signing a new one. The Tambien’s employees don’t have to worry about being out of a job, however, as all of the employees have been offered positions at other restaurants owned by Morreale, including Sketch, El Diabo, La Rumba and Rockbar.

Even as one restaurant closes its doors, another one is opening in Cherry Creek. In fact, the downstairs space located at 2710 East Third Avenue that was once home to Plush will soon become Sweet Ginger Asian Bistro & Sushi. Located next door to Argyll, the new restaurant will officially open in the middle of November. If all goes well at the liquor-license hearing, which will be held at 1:30 p.m. on October 7, the new restaurant will also be serving liquor along with its Asian cuisine. So, while some residents may be sorry to see Tambien leave the neighborhood, the opening of Sweet Ginger Asian Bistro & Sushi gives them something to look forward to.

Tesla Roadster Coming To Cherry Creek North

Tesla Motors, maker of the pure electric high performance sports car will be bringing the Tesla Roadster to Cherry Creek this weekend. The zero-emission Roadster accelerates from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds without a drop of gasoline, making it faster than many sports cars yet twice as energy-efficient as a hybrid.

The hand-built carbon fiber Roadster takes no gas and produces no fumes. There are over 1200 Roadsters on the roads today, and together they have driven over 4 million electric miles – saving more than 20,000 gallons of gas and almost 5,000 barrels of oil. It is quickly becoming the choice for discerning drivers who demand performance with a clean conscience.

As part of Tesla’s Summer Electric Roadster Tour, we will be in Cherry Creek to show that electric cars are a reality and don’t need to compromise in design, performance and engineering. We’re thrilled to offer test drives to prospective buyers.

We’d love to get the word out about the event. Please let me know if I can give you any more information on Tesla or if you are interested in checking out the roadster for yourself.
