Cherry Creek Sees Improvements in Time for the Holiday Season

While visiting Cherry Creek North for your holiday shopping, you might be surprised by some of the improvements that have been taking place within the popular shopping district. In fact, the shopping district has just finished going through the first major improvements it has seen in the last 20 years.

Largely driven by feedback from customers, smart meters have now been placed at the parking kiosks throughout Cherry Creek North. Energy-efficient lighting has also been put into place along the streets, better signs have been installed, new store directories have been put in place at every intersection and new plants have been placed along the walkway.

“The new lighting is going to make it a much better nighttime environment within the district, the new landscaping will be beautiful to look at,” said Jule Bender, who is the president of the Business District.

In all, the project cost about $18.5 million, with the more than 300 businesses within the district picking up the cost.

Cherry Creek Shopping Center has also been transformed for the holiday season. This year’s theme of Ice Palace has already been launched and Santa has already paid the shopping center a visit. In addition to the holiday décor being designed to look as if it was carved from ice, this year’s exhibit also features some highlights from the upcoming “Chronicles of Narnia” movie.

Cherry Creek Undergoes Makeover

Last year, the Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District completed its sale of $18.5 million in district bonds for the neighborhood’s first big makeover in two decades. Workers for contractor Weitz & Co. began the first phase of the project this spring. Notable changes include attractive new signs, upgraded pedestrian lighting and improved intersections. The project plans to add high-tech, pay-by-phone parking meters. And the city will repave the streets.

“It’s a very impressive project and well overdue.” Wayne New, Cherry Creek North Neighborhood Association president.

The major developments in Cherry Creek are 150 S. Madison, greenHOUSE, the Marquis Estate of Cherry Creek and NorthCreek. Consisting of 29 condos, 150 S. Madison is a residential project developed by Madison Bayaud Partnership LLC.  The first phase of Zeppelin Development’s greenHOUSE condo project includes 58 units of about 65,000 total square feet. Still in the design stage, phase two includes 160 units, a café, exercise room and pool, early childhood center, patio and walkways.

The Marquis Estate of Cherry Creek, built by Site 7 in 2006 at 278 St. Paul Street, is currently listed at $4,695,000. The residence first went on the market in January for more than $7 million. Along with its stylish and sophisticated contemporary architecture, the home features four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a formal dining room, hot tub, media room, master suite, pool and attached garage.

NorthCreek, built by Western Development Group LLC, is a mixed-use, block-sized project bounded by Detroit Street, Fillmore Plaza, Second Avenue and First Avenue. Its commercial square footage and 49 residential units total 40,000 square feet. The third phase was completed in the fall of 2009 as reported by ColoradoBiz.

Denver Arts Week

The second annual Denver Arts Week is underway, and it’s all FREE. The Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau launched the event last year as a way to get residents to focus on local visual and performing arts in a fashion reminiscent of the popular Denver Restaurant Week.

The official Arts Week period (Nov. 14 to 22) – with special performances, arts activities and lectures, nighttime hours at many museums, deals on tickets – transitions right into Denver’s 150th-birthday celebration on Nov. 22.

The event celebrates Denver’s growing cultural scene, from world-class museums to hip art galleries, from Broadway-worthy performing arts to cutting-edge theater. The arts celebration has more than 150 events that are being staged at seven arts districts around Denver and at dozens of museums, galleries and theaters.

New this year are Night at the Museums, an event based on the renowned Paris cultural celebration, “Nuit De La Musee,” in which 11 Denver museums will open their doors for FREE special events each evening from 5 to 10 p.m. FREE parking is available at Cherry Creek Shopping Center with FREE shuttles that will visit all museums, so visitors can move effortlessly from museum to museum throughout the night.
